Andrew Garran (1825-1901), journalist and politician, was born on 15 November 1825 in London, the third child of Robert Gamman, merchant, and his wife Mary Ann, née Mathews. Intended for the Congregational ministry, he went to Hackney Grammar School and a theological coaching college in Norfolk.
