Cultural Advice

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should be aware that this website contains names, images, and voices of deceased persons.

In addition, some articles contain terms or views that were acceptable within mainstream Australian culture in the period in which they were written, but may no longer be considered appropriate.

These articles do not necessarily reflect the views of The Australian National University.

Older articles are being reviewed with a view to bringing them into line with contemporary values but the original text will remain available for historical context.

Biographical Dictionary of the House of Representatives

This project charts the lives of the men and women who since Federation have held the position of Speaker, Deputy Speaker, or Clerk of the House of Representatives. The Department of the House of Representatives engaged the National Centre of Biography to prepare and publish online biographies of these men and women. The resulting sixty-four biographical entries appear on the Centre's website and later will also appear on the parliamentary website. The Department has also provided thematic articles on the roles of the Speaker, Deputy Speaker and Clerk.
